our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

Our Greatest Fear

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of
that which is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

—Marianne Williamson

I just can’t stop thinking about this piece, often said to have been quoted in a speech by Nelson Mandela. The source is Return to Love by Marianne Williamson, Harper Collins, 1992. If I am feeling anxious at all in this new year, it seems to be due to this sense of having a greater purpose. I get down on myself for not acting “powerful beyond measure” all of the time. I rely on those around me to remind me that I do enough, I am enough.  At this moment, I am where I am supposed to be and moving towards where I will be. I am grateful for those in my circles for helping me realize that everything is, indeed, possible – as long as I am true to myself.

Try, try again

Why you were born

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born
and the day you find out why.”  ~ Mark Twain
